About 4 or 5 years ago, Bill Gates was on a roll as far as being Number 1 in the globe's richest person was concerned, and I kept on telling my friends, he could not remain 'summa cum laude' forever.

Now, this year, I feel vindicated amidst all the teasing my friends have been throwing at me these past years. In fairness, Gates is still in HONOR ROLL, so to speak, a cum laude if you will.
He is now the globe's 3rd richest, with assets of 62.3B dollars...and who are the new top one and two placers?
Warren Buffett, who is now worth 66.6B dollars is summa cum laude, while ranked as "magna" is tycoon Carlos Helu. The latter is worth roughly 64.4B dollars.
Is it a new era(?)- certainly, and not only because Gates conceded the number one position that he has held for the longest, longest time. A couple of years ago, half of the globe's 20 wealthiest were from the United States, not anymore. At present, only 4 come from the US, India holds the boasting rights, they have more on the list- the biggest number of "representatives" on the roster.
I don't know about you, but I intend to be on another kind of list. The Top Ten Owners of the Oldest, Ugliest, and Lousiest Cars for This Century. I think I would be a strong contender for SUMMA.

According to this insider (a top honcho of a client services firm), to be a high roller, to be called one, he/she is not only expected to put giant sums at the table, but also spend giant number of hours gambling. However, the absence of the latter does not remove the title "high roller" from him/her. There are politicians and Hollywood celebs who are not passionate about gambling, but stay at hotel-casinos because they love the kind of suites and the different kinds of amenities.
What are the kind of perks I am speaking of? Well, you may find this ludicrous but it's true, in one big-shot establishment, for 25 grand a night, your suite comes equipped with a basketball court. I wonder if Jordan has stayed there even just one time?
If you care not a whit about basketball but cigars are your thing, then many casinos in Monte Carlo are being offered, and I am not referring to cigars that could be bought at the sidewalks. One establishment that offers this kind of thing, the Winston Churchill Suite (Hotel de Paris), just be prepared with eleven grand. Hey, if you are a true high-roller, this is actually loose change for you.

What is this- you must be asking, well, let me ask YOU...what is a Monte Carlo event? If your answer is- OF COURSE, a competition or affair happening in that place in Monaco, sorry, wrong.
When we say "Monte Carlo event", it means it is an organized affair which was sponsored by a firm, an organization for reasons of fundraising, just fun or as a means of socializing. Hey, I need to say this, Monte Carlo is also the name of a kind of solitaire, and one video game (don't ask me which one).
A lot of business entities host Monte Carlo affairs as a means of entertaining and networking with colleagues. Many Monte Carlo events are black-tie parties, with open bar, a lot of dancing, cards yes- but on the less formal kind, draft beer is not unheard of. (Fact is, I've attended so many of these things where beer was flowing like water at the Pacific).
I'll give you a little secret, which is not actually one. A big enticement of such events is: they could be done in places where gambling is prohibited by that place/state, but that my dear friends, merits its own space in this blogsite.

One online site came out recently with this article, expounding on a number of things considered as most precious not just on costs per se, but on the amount of man-hours spent on making it. One of these numerous items is the Confederate Hellcat...if you don't know what it is, it's a bike, the expensive kind of course.
Well, what I did right after reading that article, I called up 3 of the high-rollers I know (believe me, I know more than a dozen if you count the non-gambling CEOs), and out of these 3, one does not own it, one owns it, while the last one is going to buy one very soon. Now, this last one- he's an architect, I asked him, "why of all of a sudden you're going to buy one?"- even if I already knew the answer.
He said, "Well, if the experts think they are "high rollers' material"- I'd probably need to get one, just for the hell of it. I don't like bikes, but hey, I could just give it to my son, he recently said he is getting sick of his Harley". Exactly the kind of answer I expected, he did not disappoint me.
There enough said, as for me, I would settle for my bike, the non-motorized kind of course.

David Plastick is the guy, you may find his surname funny, but as far as his poker strength is concerned, there is nothing funny about it. He graduated from the Univ of Hartford, and had been a concert photographer during the eighties.
Almost immediately, when he entered the world of card games, particularly the tourneys, he started claiming victory after victory.
Now, in bits and pieces, here are salient facts about this poker pro: he cashed in in events at least 132 times, his first place endings number to five, he is in his mid-40s, and his favorite poker games include all variants of Holdem, he likes music, his favorite movie is "A Clockwork Orange"- whatever that was, and his favorite country is Thailand.
According to him, the players he respect the most are Doyle Brunson and Allen Cunningham.
A long time back, he invested big money in high-tech shares, but the stocks dropped to the ground like a boulder dropping from a cliff, and he lost those monies. This is one pro that has not won a bracelet yet in WSOP, but who knows? It may just be a matter of time, wouldn't you think?

His name is Brett, and many circles call him "the Blackjack Pro". He is responsible for the system named "Hot Hand", and he reigned supreme in many competitions, thanks to his prowess in card-counting. Not surprisingly, he got banned from many games in Vegas and Atlantic City.
How much he won (all told) from the tables is something he would not disclose, thus, your guess is as good as mine on that score. But he would concede that via these winnings to own/do the following: attend NYU, get a Beverly Hills residence after graduating, get a 1969 Camaro, get a BMW, also a Ducati motorcycle...all that. I do not know about you, but if ever I get to win the lottery, I'll settle for the BMW. You won't be able to force me to go on a motorcycle even if you pushed a bazooka to my face...those things scare me- the motorcycles, not the bazooka.
Cards and blackjack are not the only things he is good at, having gotten a film degree, he worked as actor, director and producer on theater/TV endeavors. He is also one of the owners of the Consolidated Retirement
Services, Inc- this is a planning entity that deals with retirement.

It is such a wonder that I've been filling up this blog space for years now, yet I have never written about my friend Mr Samuels (not the real name). He is the VP of a mammoth management-consultancy firm, and he is actually three months away from becoming the CEO of the said entity. He is American, early 50s, divorced once, and while he is not as rich as Kerry Packer was, he is definitely a multi-millionaire.
Half of his assets came from his business acumen, while the half is what we would call "old money". That is, he inherited it from his parents, who inherited it from their parents, all the way going back to the 18th century. (OK...that 18th century is a bit of a joke, but you should get my point).
Anyway, this guy does not gamble regularly at the casinos. If ever he does, it is because he is dragged along by his fellow high-rollers, and he would sit down at the poker tables primarily for the fun of it, not on the serious intent of augmenting his riches. (I've played against him once or twice, he sure lacks the technical skills, but he has the poker decorum to speak of).
What is his passion then(?)- you would be surprised, lotteries...yup, lotteries. Hold on guys, the first of a series, go take a break.

Of course I know Phil Ivey, rather, I know of him, and this is in part because one of his diehard fans (let me just hide him under the name Sarah) is a friend of mine. Sarah makes it a point to watch Phil Ivey in person in whatever tournament is running, and I must say, at first I thought of Sarah's actuations as overboard, but on second thought, there is something to be said about it.
Anyway, according to Sarah, what we read at the online articles are in the main, true. Ivey is one composed warrior at the tables, if you have watched that episode of Poker After Dark, remember that game where almost all of the opponents were obnoxious? I would not blame Phil Ivey if he stood up, grabbed his chair and used it as a weapon to put some sense into his competitors, but he did not. I mean, he did not use the chair, and he (I think) would be incapable as well of putting sense into those guys.
Anyway, for those who want some technical data, here goes (just a few).
WPT CREDITS: season 1- 3rd place for Foxwoods, 2nd place at Tunica, 3rd at the Finals event.
WSOP: 2000- winning the PL, / 2002- won the SHOE competition.

This is the "branded" image when we say "slots row", old ladies with buckets of coins at the side, focusing on her respective slots unit with the same concentration Garry Kasparov of Russia utilized when facing the best grandmasters of the globe (this was from 80s to mid-90s). We tend to think that they do not have the intelligence or the bankroll which could sustain them at the poker tables, that is why they settle for slots.
Actually, let me say this, just a few years ago, slots brougn in close to 6.5B dollars just to Nevada, this from the Commission's books.
This game is not just grandmother's game, according to findings, the newest kind of slots games hold much appeal to the young, and I do not mean the 30-something, more like the mid-20s. Experts say that the slots buffs taken as a whole at present is a cross-section of all kinds, on that note I agree.
If you have never heard of high-rollers playing landbased slots, then you are either not observant enough, or (without offending) your casino is a really a small one catering to a suburban population, something like one roulette wheel, 2 poker tables, a small snack bar, and that's about it.

Let me bring you back to sometime in the past, actually, a long time past. It was 1966, and that year witnessed both the good and the bad. Bad: mobsters were hitting the casinos. Good: billionaire Howard Hughes started purchasing real estate and the gambling sites. According to the talks then, it was a mission, if not a crusade for this individual who truly was one of the richest of the rich. Hughes bought all these properties to free them from links to the Mob. At that time, the Mob's participation dissipated, and this was not only due to Hughes, lest you think of him as something close to a superhero. The government's authorities stepped up on their action too, that was why.
Anyway, Hughes radically changed the perception of multitudes on Vegas. Here is one of the richest, a true hero to the eyes of so many people, and if he would put money on this place, then the "ugly" reputation Vegas is (was) holding is probably unwarranted huh?
According to one employee of this person (somebody who worked for more than a decade for Hughes), he tidies up the image, and I do not think I will contest that statement. If you want to, go, but don't involve me in any of the debates.
Hughes riches were anchored on their drill bit patent, this was in 1909, and this revolutionized the industry of oil drilling.

High rollers is a broad category of people, just like, well, athletes and politicians. There are good, there are bad politicians. There are good (I am talking of morals here) athletes, and there are crooked ones. The same with the high rollers, they come in all shades.
First, let me talk to you about skimming, it is not stealing per se, although it could come very close to that, but not quite. This is hiding the cash from our BELOVED IRS. When dollars come to the coffers of the casino, they have to be reported to the government, but naturally, the bosses of so many casinos think of ways and means of putting one over the different government agencies concerned, most particularly our BELOVED IRS.
Nowadays, it is not so easy to do that, with all the safeguards in place, not to mention the plainclothes police disguising themselves as gamblers- they are not that many though, don't worry, high-rolling casino owners.
Eons ago in Vegas, it was such an easy thing. The owner would roam, to the place where the Benjamins are being counted, then grab one grand, and off he goes, out the door. Is there anybody who would stop him/her? I mean, get real, he owns the casino, it was his cash- well- that is, up to a point, if you get my meaning.
Such a good thing I do not intend to put up my own casino, I will not be tempted. (If ever I do, you be the bill-counter, we'll split up my skimmed dough, ha ha ha).

Let me just tell you some bits and pieces regarding some of the most notable high-rollers in the casino sphere. First, aka the Godfather of Blackjack, Stanford Wong, has gambled for approximately four decades and in fact, is part of the Blackjack Halls of Fame roster.
Other names linked to high-rolling wagering are Ken Eineger, Previn Mankodi, James Grosjean and Michael Konik. Do you know anything about Ashwin Patel? He is recognized to be very superstitious yet a courageous bettor. He has collected the sum of $180,000 in just one night of gambling. Not all, but majority of them have come out with their respective novels/books about gambling games, of course, elaborating in the hints/tricks for that particular game.
Rosa (Mickey is the name) penned his MIT thesis, topic is on blackjack, believe it or not. Going to the distaff side, Regima Guzior holds the recognition of being a world-class blackjack warrior of the United States.
Archie Karas, John Montagu and Dostoevsky are still other names worthy of mention. The last one (Foydor Dostoevsky) was a novelist of Russian blood, and sad to say, was labelled under "pathological gambler" category.

Way back in 2002, the freshly-opened Palms made a tailor-made suite for the reality show "The Real World", and the owner of the establishment had this to say: (I paraphrased- when the show started, the suite became the city's best-known room, if not the most famous all over the nation. Not for me, I know of one suite which could not be beaten.)
The owner said they wanted to make a sort of playground for the Hollywood celebs. Did it work: consider this- when Britney Spears was undergoing divorce, she carried her whole collection of underwear then stayed at the Palms. She was there for half a month, and not only her. Lindsay Lohan and Hilton (Paris)- both controversial- reconciled after a rift, they supposedly shared one of the high-rollers' places. I am speaking of the twenty-five thousand dollar per night, the Sky villas of the establishment.
Did you know this: that the Verona Sky Villa is the largest suite in the whole of Vegas? Fifteen thousand plus in sq feet, all told, with gilded molding and elaborate ceilings. You want more : Old Venice furnitures and statues made of marble.
Wednesday, December 26. 2007
I was there just outside Hugh M Hefner sky villa, and I pondered on the
alternatives. I could rent their room for a single night, or buy that car I have
been dreaming of for many months now. (I decided on neither, but I will still buy
that car, ehr...maybe before year 3000).
Price: forty thousand dollars for one day ladies and gentlemen. Since the
technical definition of a day is 24 hours, it is not even a day, 20 hours to be
exact. This nine-thousand square foot found at the Palms is truly for the whales
and the high rollers.
This place is for the elite yes, but they do not hold singular distinction. Vegas
casinos with the hotels are having their premises "made over", to put up
incredible lodging just for athletes (level of Tiger Woods, not the obscure),
celebs (level of Julia Roberts, not the obscure), politicians (level of...level of...er, never mind).
So many suites in Vegas would cost us no less than ten grand per night, and boy
oh boy, here are the usual things one can find in such a room: hydraulic bed, a bathroom the size of my garage (mind you, I have a big garage) and here's one, listen to this.
I once stayed at a casino (off-Vegas) where their top suite held a mini-fountain,
you know, that decor-fountain with all that water sprouting. Something like that in the picture, cut that down into 30%.
(No, I just took a peek, I stayed at another more affordable suite, who do you think I am, a WHALE?)

What term: our much-touted magic phrase- HIGH ROLLERS. Traditionally referred to as "whale" in the gambling circles, this is one who bets huge (millions or billions in a span of a few days- the billions though is very rare) money in the games. Due to the possible windfall that these large monies could bring to the House's coffers, the high rollers are treated as gods, no exaggeration and no blasphemy intended.
They get lavish rewards, things not accorded to ordinary gamblers, things like the use of the private limo (or the helicopter, or the Lear Jet). A lot of gamblers (these whales) have tables with high limit, and they could "eject out" the rest of humanity, meaning those who are low-rollers. Take note, I am not referring to just poker here, you can think backgammon if you want.
Do you know who John Eidsmoe is? In his book, entitled "Legalized Gambling: America's Bad Bet"- he asserts that it is actually wagerers from the lower/lower-mid classes of the country that give the bulk of the gambling monies, but I will not discuss that. Maybe another time if you request for it?

My friend Wilfred's son is what most people would call academically average. However, coming into tertiary education, he shocked all of us (including his father) by passing the very difficult qualifying exams of the two colleges he applied to, one of which is Ivy League. (Let me say this as early as now, his family and my family have known each other for the longest time, I know everybody in Wilfred's family, including their pet piranha).
Out of sheer ecstasy, his dad (my friend) threw out a big party in their residence, which, while not a mansion, is big enough to accommodate more than 100 heads. On the night of the party, there I was, enjoying a rare kind of wine, when Wilfred approached me and said, "Francis, if you'd be kind enough, Margareth wants to speak with you in private. It's quite important, believe me".
Margareth is their oldest child, fresh out from law school, and while I consider her as a bit aloof, we do respect each other.
I stopped and faced Wilfred, "can you at least tell me what it's about?"
"No, not here, she is at the study waiting for you".
Before we go to the study guys, I need to go to the BATHROOM, let's take a break.

In my book, there are different kinds of high rollers, first of course,
would be the truly rich (as opposed to just rich)- the millionaires
and the billionaires, those that belong to old money. Second would be the
non-gambling individuals, yet are world-famous due to specific
undertakings (Bill Gates comes to mind, hey, does he gamble?).
Third would be those who are gambling and lottery winners, and the
person I'll be speaking of belongs to this category. He clinched the UK's
biggest (by far) online jackpot, worth 2,058,888 pounds.
He clinched this via the Millionaires Club online slots, and he has
entered UK history as its first online gaming double millionaire...ok, so
you want to know his name? It's Mojo, of course that is not the real
name, that's his username. The progressive jackpot he clinched accrued
for a long time, 2 years in fact. (I can hear the managers concerned, I
can hear their sigh of relief).
This game takes its roots from the traditional 3-reel fruit games that
became famous in pubs, well, that's another era. The manager of the
casino had this to say: "We are absolutely delighted that this jackpot has
been won". Not me, I would be absolutely DELIGHTED if it had been me,
the last online money I won came from a non-gambling raffle. That was
about 50$, it was so small I forgot to claim it.
Tuesday, December 11. 2007
Well, I do not wish to use the word "requiem" lightly, yet when I closed my eyes and thought of another term, I could not think of one. So there, whether you like it or not, that's the title.
Just some weeks ago, we- the gambling world- celebrated (mourned too, if you want to be on the other side) the first year anniversary of the closing of one of the long-standing gambling icons, the Stardust Hotel and Casino. It had to shut down after 48 years of gambling, cocktails and yes, corruption too. Here is the question: why was this casino unique (in a way)?
Tradition and history would be the answer, and by telling you about the "founder", you will understand what I mean. Put up in 1958, this site was the dream of Tony Cornero (a gangster). When he relocated from Italy to San Francisco, he joined the rhum-running enterprise.
Many years later, (I will skip on why he was sent to jail)- he bought forty acres using revenues from floating casinos, and he planned a thousand-room resort/casino, and during the 50s, it was the biggest on Vegas turf.
The amusing and ironic thing was, the Stardust finally saw completion when Cornero- the dreamer and planner- was already deceased.

A century ago, (OK...that is figurative) when I was still in the university, I had a friend named Jeff. He was in a political science course and he hated every minute of it. On one of the rare occasions that he disclosed personal things to me, I found out that he came from a very long line of lawyers, and so, his dad "encouraged" him to take a political science course. (The encouraged could be synonymous to "forced").
I asked him what he really wanted if left to his own desires, and he said he was in love with sports. He said he wanted to become a coach (I forgot what field) for a big university. He admitted that he has revealed this to his father, and the latter hit the ceiling, shouting, "You've gotta be out of your mind, nobody makes a cent from a coaching job, NOBODY!" -OR words to that effect.
Well, I've lost touch with Jeff a very long time ago, but in case he is reading this, I strongly suggest you have this printed out, and then you can show it to your father.
There are 4 coaches (college football)- Florida's Urban Meyer, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Alabama's Nick Saban, and Ferentz of Iowa- all reached the three million dollar mark. For this year, the average pay of the college football coaches (120 of them) reached one million dollars, and that does not include the side perks.
There, Jeff, I don't know what became of you, but I am praying that you have found your passion, coaching or not.
Tuesday, December 4. 2007
Well, there are a lot of reason I guess, but one of them is that Alex Rodriguez just penned a 275M dollar contract, so, the gossip in real-estate cliques (Manhattan) is this- a 39M dollar townhouse at East 80th St is on the horizon.
As per the records , any deal for this year would be (US') 6TH most expensive sale as far as 2007's home deals are concerned.
Home prices in many parts of the nation have been on the slump, but not Manhattan. It has set new records, to name one: Harry Macklowe's sixty million dollar buy of a whole Plaza Hotel floor (gossip has it there was one maverick apartment), and not just that. A new cost-per-square-foot with Sanford Weill's 42.4M dollar action, if you want the figures: $6,287/interior sq foot.
I really do not know if Tom Cruise gambles, but he is a true high-roller in my book for 2 reasons. One: he has consistently topped experts' surveys of the most popular Hollywood performer (I used that word to include both genders). Two: he is still one of the highest-paid actors. OK, I'll give a third- he bought a 32.5M dollar mansion in Beverly Hills.
(I bought a mansion too, it's as big as your garage...I got it for 32 dollars after an hour of haggling).

His name is Torph, and while we do not exactly consider each other as friends, we are warm when we are together in any social function. After all, he married my niece, so he's part of the family PLUS, he knows poker too.
Well Torph is a backgammon buff, and while I am not exactly passionate about that game, I do know the rules. Well, here is the thing, my niece (his wife) is somewhere in Asia right now for business conferences, and just on the first week of her absence, Torph admitted that she is already sorely missed. He disclosed that when we attended a charity-fundraiser and boy, he sure looked down. He looked like his house got burned and his puppy got dognapped all at the same time.
Anyway, I sent him an email yesterday saying, "Torph, read my next entry in my blogsite, it would cheer you up".
Well Torph, this is THAT next entry, have fun. Log on to ITV Backgammon high roller, they are holding events each Sunday. I don't have the url address, as a friend just informed me of this one. (Knowing you, you do not need it).
There, for all backgammon enthusiasts out there, you might want to join my friend there? Who knows, I might just join in, just for the hell of it.
Wednesday, November 14. 2007
My acquaintance Robby is nowhere near a high roller, fact is, he probably earns less than I do on a monthly basis. Even if he does, he is nearer the stingy side of the spending spectrum. For him, his idea of lavish gambling is max- 200$ fed to the video poker games in his favorite casino somewhere in NY.
However, he told me that on his last trip to Vegas, he and his wife spent 3 nights in 2 major hotels, dined many times, and even received slippers, not the cheap kind we can buy at Walmart, the slippers cost more than 100$, can you believe that? All of this without Robby spending more than 50$, and that fifty dollars went to tips and valet parking.
Well, I told him "lucky you", but also told him that at this day and age, it's no longer shocking. Due to the fierce competition among and between the various landbased sites, and the competition existing between online sites and landbased sites, comps are literally overflowing.
It used to be that comps were principally rooms and show tickets, now we can have coffeemakers, carpets (yes, carpets) and toasters. One last word if you are not a high roller, do not get too excited though. The use of the casino's limousine is still confined to very few people, just to bring you down to earth.

Outside the rare Super Bowl wager and some tries at the Pro-line, Lawrence Ho asserts he is not much of a gambler, but that I guess, is subject to debate.
This 30-something son of a true high-roller casino tycoon wagered big-time on what he did at Macau. Melco PBL Entertainment Ltd's CEO and co-chair has been trying so hard to make this part of the world map into something not only worthy of Vegas, but something WORTHIER. Not too long ago, his firm opened its first casino-hotel, Crown Macau, and right after concentrated on two more gambling sites. That site is indeed very comparable with the best Vegas could offer, and this is not a statement made lightly.
Advertently or inadvertently, (you be the judge), this shoved him into a "clash on" competition with his father, who monopolized things up to 2002. When the leaders of this place said, "enough, enough of this monopoly", Steve Wynn and another bigshot, Sheldon Adelson made their moves to grab a piece of the action. Australian billionaire James Packer joined the action too, as a financial bankroller.

A big revelation is about to come, not exactly biblically revealing, but a novelty nonetheless. Poor (not in finances, playing-wise) golfers with giant egos with big money would "fight it out" in golf.
It is the crux of the concept of High Stakes Entertainment Group, about to debut on the first tourney, to be held at Bali Hai Golf Club. Guess who is co-founder of this affair: no other than one of poker's greatest, no...not Stu Ungar, guys, that one is deceased. I'm speaking of Doyle Brunson, and said he: it was a way of life for him, all throughout.
This event would be made up of 2 individual events in a matter of two days. First day is a 3-team, 3-man fight in a 9-hole contest. Second day would be made up of 9 2-man squads, best ball would be the game. Every team would have to shell out 250 thousand dollars, with payouts to best teams and guess what again? Winner would become at least one million dollars richer, as per the reports.
So there, now you have to excuse me, I'm doing my own golfing. Against my dog, the bet is bone against ten bucks.
Thursday, November 1. 2007
I do not mean to say that it was built for the high-rollers, but with the sum spent to have it put up, er...you will get the point later.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology has sued well-known architect Frank Gehry, due to alleged major design flaws at the Stata Center. This is one of the novel structures, a stand-out even in an era where novel establishments are mushrooming. This center is celebrated for very unusual walls and angles, you'd have to see the pictures to believe it. That is the reason I travelled a thousand miles just to get that picture for you, ha ha ha.
According to the school, snow/ice have dropped from window boxes, resulting to damages and creating blocks to exits. According to reports, MIT paid Gehry Partners fifteen millions dollars for the design, which (the building as a whole) cost 300 MILLION DOLLARS to be erected. This building has offices, classrooms and labs.
Well, what can I say, my humble five-cents worth take is that it would be better for the two parties to just talk. Our courts are busy enough as it is, Gehry would earn my admiration if they concede to a compromise, of whatever nature.

Some high rollers out of sheer exhaustion could not care less if there were no gambling, but only
